If you would like to create genuine, long term-change through charitable giving, then it’s worth considering developing a giving plan – a personalized strategy that helps you to find enjoyment in philanthropy.
Defining your values and your giving personality are important elements to consider when developing your plan, as the causes we support are tied to our core beliefs as individuals.
However, with over 85,000 charities in Canada to choose from, deciding which charities to support can be challenging.
Answering the following four simple questions can be a good starting point when trying to decide where to donate your money.
- Do you like “blue chip” charities or more grassroots work?
- Do you prefer local or international work?
- Do you want the charities you support to report back on their results, or are you happy to leave them to do their work without much interaction?
- How do you define impact?
Once you have defined your priorities, you can search for charities on CHIMP. Each charity profile on CHIMP provides a breakdown of where charities get their money, and how they spend it. This information is there to help you make informed giving decisions and to provide visibility on how your donations will be spent.
