O, Canada! Do you want to create an impact?

Did you know that 71% of Canadians say they feel a personal obligation to make the world a better place?

We thought that Canada Day would be a great time to reflect on this, the generosity of Canadians, and how they create an impact through charitable giving.

So, we know that Canadians want to do their part to make the world a better place. But, how many people are actually giving money to the causes they care about? 

The most recent data shows that 84% of Canadians, aged 15 and over, donate to charity. And, according to the Thirty Years of Giving report by Imagine Canada, charities reported receiving total donations of $18.5 billion in 2014.

However, although many people engage with giving, data shows that one-third of Canadian’s feel like they want to do more for charity, but something is holding them back. One major problem seems to be lack of faith in charities. 61% of Canadians say they would give more to charity if they “had more confidence in the whole thing”.

One of the things that Canadian’s celebrate on Canada Day is new people to the country. A nation of immigrants, roughly one-in-five Canadians were born in another country. New Canadians seem to have the same concerns when it comes to charity, with 84% of immigrants saying they would give more if they felt more confident. 

Regardless of this, new Canadians tend to be great donors. There are a number of reasons for this, but here are two of them.

Firstly, they often have strong religious beliefs, and through their religions they are taught to give. In fact, 71% of first-generation immigrants say their religious beliefs strongly influence their giving habits, compared to 46% of the general population. 

Secondly, they are grateful for what Canada has provided for them, and they act upon this gratitude by giving.
